@Erich
In my case, it's a two-CPU system, 4 years old. No it does not transcode on the fly! I wish it did to help with my Sony TV!

What processor how much RAM and NIC has the hda-server for 1080p streaming? Does it transcode on the fly? If so I'd think that you need a strong processor, right? Do more than 1 processor core help?

I have the WD TV Live http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=735 and can do 1080p without breaking a sweat from my HDA.
My TV (Sony Bravia, slightly old model), has a DLNA server in it (plus a media center-like functionality that can show podcasts and other videos, including highly compressed HD from the web) and can also play 1080p from the HDA, however, only MPEG streams.
Maybe a firmware upgrade helps or perhaps we can add MPEG transcoding on-the-fly to the server.
