Ubuntu Alpha 3 landed, with ARM support February 16
Hello! Rumors of our demise to Apple were greatly exaggerated
We’re extremely happy to announce the third Alpha release of Amahi for Ubuntu.
This release supports Ubuntu 11.10, and paves the way for supporting the next LTS (Long Term Support) release, 12.04.
Support for 32 and 64 bits is included, as well as ARM support, having been run on the PandaBoard!
We’re also confident it probably works well on systems like the BeagleBoard and similar boards. We’re looking to also port Amahi on the upcoming launch of the Raspberry Pi $25 boards in the coming weeks.
These probably make the most compact and power efficient Amahi systems yet!
Note that this is still alpha and takes some MAD SKILLZ to install.
Many thanks go to Frans (better known as eFfeM, our team lead for Ubuntu, who is back with a vengeance) and the rest of you that helped test Amahi on Ubuntu with this great new release!

Hi,
Thanks for mentioning the MAD SKILLZ needed. Being a Ubuntu GUI user, I’ll wait for a more friendly installer to show up.
I know this is alpha, but “Ubuntu and MAD Linux INSTALL SKILLZ” do not usually go in the same phrase.
Keep up the great work !

Amahi on Raspberry Pi, I hear? Now that would be absolutely, completely one of the best and most splendid things ever! I’d been hoping to do something with the Pi to make a super low-power system, and was worried I would have to move away from Amahi to do so. It would not be my idea of fun trying to set up something similar manually.

Very cool to hear that level of interest for the Raspberry Pi. The team has been ping for the Pi since it came out, because it seems such a natural fit. We will take a look at it!

I think that I would like to try this on Ubuntu but do not feel I am at the level just yet. I am still learning more and more about linux and enjoy it. I too would like to see something on the Raspberry Pi as I would like to pick one up to play with and this would be a great thing to try out..

I am afraid it will NOT work on Raspberry Pi. It’s CPU is supports only ARMv6 instruction set, it will also not work on plug computers like SheevaPlug as Marvell is using ARMv5. Only the modern Arm Cortex A8 and A9 based (ARMv7) CPUs are compatible with Ubuntu ARM. I think that among the the larger distributions, only Fedora ARM and Debian ARM are the closest thing to running Amahi.

I’m well aware that newer ubuntu versions won’t work on R Pi (or sheeva or so).
However quite some work has also been done to make this work on debian systems (and debian is supported on the armv5 and up and is already released for the Pi)
I’m planning to focus on this soon.
